WEEK OF MAY 21ST
Greetings all,
This past week the students worked very very hard on their pieces for our showcase. We perfected all aspects and I was very much surprised on how it all came together. Well not too surprised. The kids wanted to be proud of their accomplishments and because of that, they more than pulled it off. For those of you who came last night, I want to thank you. It means a lot to the kids when parents come to support them. I think many of the parents were amazed that their child performed in front of people. I will say that the students were most nervous about performing in front of their middle school peers. They said they didn’t want to appear foolish. I told them that all their friends will admire their strength and courage to do what they did. In the end, the students felt great…..as I promised they would. It was a long day. We were literally together from 8:00 am to almost 8:00 pm. They had fun having dinner together and singing in the cafeteria to shake out any “nerves”. A great bunch of kids, I must say. For sure I found some “stars”. Lots of hidden talent and a chance to laugh at some of the goofy things they say and do. I believe new friendships began as well. I told them from the very beginning, theater kids make the best and most lasting friendships. It will come true for them.
We also had a great time on our field trip. We had the entire movie theater to ourselves while we saw “The Greatest Showman”. For the students who never saw it before it was a special treat. They LOVED it. I was so happy to be the one to introduce it to them. The movie has so many wonderful messages of kindness, humanity, and love. What more can we wish for our children?
This next week we’ll be starting to wind down. We’ll contrast and compare the movies we saw in class and go over the different aspects of musical theater.
I will also start going over the curriculum for next year. That will include more hands—on technical aspects such as costume design, set and prop design, make-up, and hair.
Again, thank you to the parents who came and for giving the drama department their donation in the form of a ticket price. The drama department now has a budget. It’s small but it’s a start!
Theatrically yours,
Joanne Shultz
